Local Motors - Sport Car design challenge
Taking the guidelines and looking at the vehicles of inspiration, I came up with this street/track adaptable design. Taking cues from the already existing vehicles available as well as design aspects from LeMans Prototypes, F1, and specialty race series cars, my version of XSP-4 ( Experimental Sport Prototype - 4 Cylinder) is born. The idea behind this is a street car that you can purchase a track package for from LM and on the evening before or morning of your track day, change your car from street to track mode with the tools you already have in your garage. The sides and much of the car that can be seen in fact are exposed triangulated chassis with front and rear double wishbone suspension and inboard front dampers. Along with the front windshield hoop, there is a single raised triangle from the chassis behind the passengers doubling as extra clearance for roll-over safety and vertical stabilizer for aero stability.
In street mode, large body coverings on the top most areas and large trunk area give striking color profile to the car, and with OEM lighting, you don't have to worry about night driving or getting pulled over due to your non D.O.T lights.
In track mode, the trunk, fender coverings, and lighting is all removed giving full view of the already very visible suspension and drive train components. The carbon composite aero add-ons would keep the car stable and stuck to the ground all day.
